A lapping film is basically really fine sandpaper. In this case very fine diamond crystals were placed on a flexible paper base. These diamond crystals are almost invisible to the naked eye. The lapping films slowly remove material and are therefore not suited to sharpen a blunt knife. They are, however, great when sharpening an already sharp knife.
We recommend starting with the 9 or 6 micron lapping films and only use those after the KME Gold Series diamond-coated sharpening stone extra fine 1500 grit or the KME ~1000 grit Hard Arkansas natural sharpening stone. This are the finest KME sharpening stones. You could, however, always use a finer sharpening stone. Afterwards, you can proceed in steps to the finest 0.1 micron lapping film. As soon as you start using these fine lapping films you will end up with a razor-sharp, mirrored edge.
Tips: Always sharpen away from the edge! As such the knife won’t cut into the lapping film.
KME recommends using a little bit of oil as you polish your knife. Even vegetable oil will do!
Don’t use any force. You can use a lapping film approximately 5 to 8 times. As soon as you apply too much pressure the lapping film will not last as long!
